2019-2020 Biddy Basketball Ceremonies Recap

YMCA of Auburn – Lewiston Presents the 2019-2020 William J. Hood Outstanding Volunteer Award to Leonard Kimble

2019-20 Award Recipient Leonard Kimble and YMCA Sports Coordinator Ally Kennedy

The YMCA’s Outstanding Volunteer Award is named after William J. Hood who was an exemplary youth leader in the Auburn-Lewiston community. Mr. Hood played at the YMCA as a youngster in the church league through the 1940’s. He continued to be committed to the YMCA’s Biddy Basketball program as a coach, sponsor, donor and mentor until he passed away in 1985. This award is given in honor of Mr. Hood for the positive impact he made and his commitment to the Y’s Biddy Basketball program, and area youth.

This year’s recipient, Leonard Kimble, coached at multiple levels in the Biddy Basketball Program over the past 4 years. He coached In-House teams, assisted with travel basketball, and spent countless hours over many weekends, officiating games and assisting at the scorer’s table.

Most importantly, Coach Kimble understands the responsibility of what it means to be a coach at the Y, and as it should be, that winning is secondary. What is most important is helping kids improve their skills, build self-confidence, achieve success, and helping them build the positive relationships that lead to good sportsmanship and teamwork. Thank you for all that you have done for the Biddy Basketball Program, Leonard! You will be missed!

1st Year Players with their Basketballs

In conjunction with honoring her husband, the late William J. Hood, Mrs. Jeanne Hood and her family have continued to support The Y’s Biddy Basketball Program for almost 50 years. They established and continue to carry on the tradition of providing basketballs to all First Year Players in the YMCA Biddy Basketball Program. These last 3 years we have averaged over 60 basketballs given to first year players in the program. We thank Mrs. Hood and her family for their continued support and overwhelming generosity.

The YMCA Co-ed Biddy Basketball League serves Auburn, Lewiston, and the surrounding communities by affording boys and girls in grades 1–6 an opportunity to participate in an organized basketball program.

This Y program is designed to teach the fundamentals of basketball and to develop kids’ skills in dribbling, passing, and shooting in a team environment. The Biddy Basketball League offers three divisions: Rookie [grades 1-2], Pee Wee [grades 3-4] and Junior [grades 5-6]. Each division will conduct a player evaluation and draft, recognizing individual talent levels in order to provide the best possible scenario for equal play among teams.

Youth Basketball at the Y is more than just learning the game. Programming is based on character development and the Y’s core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility. The focus of the program is to have each child gain an understanding of the game, improve skill level, learn team play, build self-esteem, show good sportsmanship, and most of all have fun! Financial Assistance is available for qualifying families.
